I was six years old when John Lewis and other civil rights
marchers were brutally beaten by state troopers in Selma, Alabama
in the struggle for voting rights. Just five months later -- 55
years ago today -- President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting
Rights Act into law.

That monumental legislation helped remove legal barriers at the
state and local levels that prevented African Americans from
exercising their right to vote. But in 2013, the U.S. Supreme
Court gutted the law in a 5-4 decision, opening the door to the
voter suppression tactics we see today across our country.

Please join me in demanding that Congress immediately pass the
John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act of 2020 to restore critical voter
protections. We can't allow the GOP to take away people's rights
and steal this election by suppressing the vote.

Unending lines, defective voting machines, voter caging
(challenging voter registrations), and even harassment have been
used to disenfranchise voters in many parts of our country,
overwhelmingly aimed at communities of color.

In 2018 hundreds of thousands of residents In Georgia were
purged from the voting rolls or had their registrations put on
hold -- and a disproportionate number of them were Black or other
people of color.

Without immediate Congressional action, we will see more of
these outrageous tactics in November.

Voting Rights Act right away!

Donald Trump wants to undermine our electoral process. We can't
let him succeed. Together we must make sure ALL Americans are
able to exercise their right to vote in this upcoming critical
election and beyond.

Onward,
