Jack,

For this week's Sustainer Sunday, we’re bringing you a story from Heather
Wiik-DuBois, a hardworking mom from Calumet County who has seen firsthand
how the healthcare system is failing vulnerable people.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

As a kid, I watched our healthcare system fail the people around me. My
family couldn't afford dental care, and I had cavities. After researching
on the school computer, I made the decision to pull the affected teeth
myself. No child should ever have to experience that kind of pain when the
treatment should be simple and affordable.

I went on to work in healthcare as a certified Community-Based Residential
Facility (CBRF) caregiver. For years, I witnessed how the system mistreats
our elders – they're left isolated, abandoned and stripped of everything
they built while the system protects the ones profiting from their
situation.

I was a salaried manager making $13 an hour and working 100-hour pay
periods. My bonus for keeping things running? A $20 gas card. That's when
I got radicalized about workers' rights, and about our right to have a
life outside of our labor.

I'm almost 37. My youngest is 13. I've worked through most of my
children's lives, and there's still no relief in sight. The working class
is becoming the new corporate slave class, and we have to fight back.

That's why I support Fran. I've agreed with everything she stands for
since before she ran for anything — service to community, civility,
consideration, and kindness for all people.

Stories like Heather’s are the reason this campaign exists.

In the legislature, Fran fought for safe staffing mandates in nursing
homes and hospitals. As governor, she'll expand Medicaid, crack down on
insurance companies that deny care, and make the billion-dollar hospital
systems that pay nothing in taxes start investing in the communities they
serve.
