Today marks the 55th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, which codified protections against discrimination at the ballot box.
John, the Supreme Court handed down a decision in 2013 that effectively gutted the VRA and allowed states with long histories of voter discrimination to enact extreme laws that make it harder for folks to vote -- especially people of color.
This year, Americans face even more hurdles to safely cast their ballots in the wake of the new health concerns posed by the coronavirus.
Our democracy doesn’t work if eligible Americans cannot make their voices heard in our elections. Will you add your name and call on Congress to restore the Voting Rights Act and expand it to ensure Americans can safely vote from home this November?
Recently, we lost Rep. John Lewis, a civil rights icon and an unwavering champion for voting rights. Rep. Lewis fought to secure the voting rights of all Americans, even putting himself in physical danger when he led marchers across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma.
After Rep. Lewis bravely marched in Selma and thanks to his fearless work, the Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965.
But Republicans across the country are actively undoing all of the progress Rep. Lewis fought for by instituting voter restrictions -- including ID laws, voter roll purges, and more -- that suppress Americans’ right to vote.
John Lewis led the charge for voting rights. We need to continue his fight today. Please -- add your name and call on Congress to restore the Voting Rights Act and expand it so voters can safely cast their ballots from home in 2020.
Thanks,
Team VFH 2020
