RECALLS, RECALLS EVERYWHERE
The hot summer trend? Trying to recall governors. There are now five recall attempts happening nationwide [[link removed]] , including the two against the U.S. first openly LGBTQ Governor, Kate Brown , and Colorado’s first openly LGBTQ Governor, Jared Polis .
There are two groups campaigning against Governor Brown: the Oregon GOP, and this citizen’s effort. It appears the two are not coordinated – yet. [[link removed]]
You might be asking yourself: why spend the time, effort and taxpayer money attempting to recall a Governor? Maybe you’re “protecting the Constitution.” Maybe you don’t like their policies [[link removed]] . Maybe you just don’t like them. [[link removed]]
Remember: the recall efforts against Gov. Brown started after lawmakers refused to vote and subsequently fled the state. And while they threw an electoral temper tantrum, Gov. Brown’s party is updating the rules to prevent future walkouts [[link removed]] .
(PRO-EQUALITY) PARTY IN THE U.S.A.
Despite the attempted recall against him, Governor Jared Polis is still working hard. Fulfilling a major campaign promise, kindergarten is free for the 2019-2020 school year [[link removed]] . Governor Polis also signed a law mandating Colorado classrooms teach LGBT+ history in schools [[link removed]] !
If the recall stories haven't convinced you, being an elected official isn't a walk in the park. Victory Institute President & CEO Mayor Annise Parker detailed her experiences in office here. [[link removed]]
Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey has brought at least 43 lawsuits against the Trump administration to date, [[link removed]] including cases over the detention of migrant children [[link removed]] and pesticide use [[link removed]] .
U.S. Congressman Mark Pocan [[link removed]] joined with other Wisconsin lawmakers to condemn Trump’s trade wars.
And joining Representatives Mark Pocan, David Cicilline and Chris Pappas in calls for impeachment proceedings: Representative Mark Takano [[link removed]] .
Georgia is also feeling the effects of Trump’s trade wars [[link removed]] and State Representative Sam Park [[link removed]] is working to hold Georgia’s governor accountable.
Councilwoman Candi CdeBaca has kept busy since her election earlier this year: She's leading the effort to end the city’s contract with private companies for Denver's halfway houses. [[link removed]]
THE NEXT GENERATION
We made the front page [[link removed]] ! Our Domestic Programs team successfully executed their THIRD Candidate & Campaign Training of the year in Minneapolis, Minnesota, successfully training 44 LGBTQ leaders. Staff is excited to report that women, members of the trans community and nonbinary attendees comprised 56% of training attendees! Victory Institute has now trained over 120 LGBTQ leaders to run for office in 2019.
An enormous thank you to the openly LGBTQ elected officials who joined us in Minneapolis, including Congresswoman Angie Craig, Judge Kim Dawson, State Representative Hunter Cantrell, State Senator Scott Dibble and Councilmember Andrea Jenkins!

State legislators also gathered in Nashville for the 2019 NCSL Legislative Summit. And more importantly, they joined Victory Institute for the LGBTQ State Legislators Reception. Over 146 LGBTQ leaders and allies mingled at what one attendee described as “the best event hosted by an LGBTQ organization”. Speakers included former DC Councilmember David Catania, Maryland Sen. Mary Washington, Colorado Rep. Leslie Herod and Victory Institute Vice President Ruben J. Gonzales.
Pictures of the event can be found here – keep an eye out for Amazon’s self-driving robot [[link removed]] !
This event would not have been possible without the assistance of our generous hosts, sponsors and supporters: Georgetown Public Affairs, Catalyst Government Relations, Cox, Facebook & Instagram and Schmidt Government Solutions.
