Thanks to your help, the Safe Line Speeds in COVID-19 Act was introduced in the House of Representatives a few weeks ago. This week, a companion bill was also introduced in the Senate, giving us two chances to pass this important legislation.
Aside from slowing slaughter speeds, the Senate bill also directs the Government Accountability Office to conduct a review of the how well the USDA protected animals and workers during COVID-19. That review has the potential to facilitate lasting systemic change in the meat industry.
Contact your senator and urge them to co-sponsor the Safe Line Speeds in COVID-19 Act.
Farm fact
97% of calves born on dairy farms are taken away from their mothers within the first 24 hours of their lives so their mother's milk can be used for human consumption.
Dairy compromises one’s health and disproportionately affects people of color. Approximately 36% of Americans are lactose intolerant, and between 70-95% of Black, Asian, Native American, Hispanic, and Ashkenazi Jewish people are lactose intolerant. It's unethical to inform the American people that dairy is healthy when over one-third of them cannot digest it.
Cows form strong maternal bonds and are attentive, protective, and loving parents. Mother cows at sanctuaries are even known to adopt orphaned calves.
