My story started in the heart of Milwaukee in the 53206 zip code, Wisconsin’s poorest and the nation’s most incarcerated.

My grandfather moved to Milwaukee after serving during World War II. He worked in a factory, and there were thousands of people just like him whose jobs paid the bills and helped build a comfortable life for a family.
Those jobs got sent overseas – all because of corporate greed.
Wealthy billionaires and huge corporations have been destabilizing our communities just to line their own pockets.
This story is not unique. It’s not about left or right or even urban or rural. It’s happening more and more all across Wisconsin. Corporations are buying up farms and houses and leaving it on us to bear the burden.
The turning point in my life came for me in high school, when I lost my first friend to gun violence. As I got older, I lost more friends and saw more of my community struggling with similar tragedies. I recognized that this is happening too often in our communities – that we were experiencing far too much violence without enough systemic support.
And if the government can be quick to respond to the needs of the wealthiest individuals in this country, we should be even quicker to support the people who need our help the most.
These are the people who are ignored by our government time and time again.
