When the COVID-19 crisis first started, GOP Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas refused to wear a mask while on Capitol Hill.
Now, Gohmert has been diagnosed with COVID-19 -- and may have spread the virus to another representative.
Democratic Rep. Raul Grijalva was diagnosed with the virus after attending a hearing with Gohmert.
Grijalva did not mince words when describing Gohmert and other GOP members who refused to take COVID seriously: “Numerous Republican members routinely strut around the Capitol without a mask to selfishly make a political statement at the expense of their colleagues, staff, and their families.”
Gohmert also put his staffers at risk -- the same staffers, according to Politico, who were chastised for wearing masks in their offices. Staffers had been forced to stay in D.C. to provide “an example to America on how to open up safely.”
Gohmert is indicative of the Republican Party’s refusal to take the pandemic, or science, seriously.
We wish the congressman a speedy recovery -- but we hope others can learn from his irresponsible actions.
