John,
After months of relentless assaults on our democratic institutions, President Trump is now doing his best to sabotage the upcoming election.
Let’s take a moment and think about what that means for our democracy. That means that the fundamental values on which our country was founded are being threatened by a president determined to maintain power.
It is hard to overstate how scary that is. Unfortunately, the truth is that the president’s attacks on the election are happening on several fronts:
-
We first saw the lengths Trump would go to tamper with the election last fall when news broke that he pressured the Ukrainian president to dig up dirt on former Vice President Biden, President Trump’s opponent. Of course, President Trump was impeached for that, but that does not mean he won’t try something similar again.
-
Trump is also allowing top officials to openly campaign from the White House, which violates the Hatch Act. This has been going on for more than three years now, but the violations are piling up faster than ever. We recently filed a complaint against Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, and just last week, we filed a complaint against Stephen Miller for giving an interview in his official capacity where he attacked Biden.
-
Last week, Trump tweeted suggesting that the election be delayed over fraud and safety concerns. This should go without saying, but he does not have the power to do that—only Congress does. In fact, the White House just accused Hong Kong of undermining the democratic process by postponing their elections—and if it undermines democracy abroad, it undermines it here as well.
-
If Trump was really concerned about the safety of holding the election during a pandemic, he would strengthen vote-by-mail options. Instead, he has appointed a massive donor to his campaign as postmaster general, who is already slowing down the mail—which could undercut voting by mail—and who gave six figures to a fund fighting against vote-by-mail.
While President Trump does not have the power to move the election, he does have the power to undermine trust in the democratic process—and we have already seen him do just that. After the results are tallied, he may refuse to accept them. To prepare for that possibility, CREW has joined a coalition of groups pledging to mobilize against his anti-democratic moves if that happens. Pledge to join us here.>>>
The election is less than 100 days away, and these concerns are becoming more and more urgent as November approaches. We need everyone with us to ensure the integrity of the election. When we say we are fighting for our democracy, this is what we mean.
Thank you for standing with us,
Noah Bookbinder
