John,

The same activist law firms that brought us Citizens United and the anti-union Janus decision are at it again, attacking Montana’s campaign finance laws.

Fresh off a failed challenge to Montana’s DISCLOSE Act, these activist are now attacking Governor Bullock’s dark money executive order.

This lawsuit says the quiet part out loud. The dark money group says it wants to influence the 2020 Montana Governor’s election. But it won’t do so if it has to disclose the source of its corporate donors.

That’s the point of transparency: so corporations cannot spend unlimited sums to buy our elections--without at least saying who's really behind the money.

The same groups recently lost their challenge to Montana’s bipartisan DISCLOSE Act. This new challenge to Montana’s campaign finance laws is another dark money attack to buy our elections.

That’s why this election is critical. I’ve already worked to promote clean and transparent elections—elections that belong to Montanans, not dark money groups.

As AG, I’ll defend Montana’s elections and continue to fight against these out-of-state dark money groups.

As Montanans have done time and again, we’ll stand up to this challenge and make sure that our elections belong to us, and the Attorney General works for us.
