Parliament Must be a Safe Workplace
Fawcett has joined with the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Centenary Action Group, Women's Aid, Unite and others in calling for the Conservative MP suspected of rape to be suspended while a full investigation is carried out (Read the joint statement ([link removed][UNIQID]) ). Sam Smethers, Fawcett CEO, says "Failure to do so sends the signal that parliament is not serious about tackling issues of sexual harassment and assault." (Read Sam's full response ([link removed][UNIQID]) .)
Parliament should be no different to other workplaces and staff must be protected. As shown in Dame Laura Cox's 2018 review and Fawcett's 2019 report on sexual harassment in Parliament ([link removed][UNIQID]) , legislative changes and action by political parties is needed to ensure that Parliament is a safe workplace for women. The introduction of the Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme was a positive step, but more is urgently needed.
📢 Please help us build pressure by tweeting the below and tagging your MP:
Parliament is a workplace & staff must be protected. Suspend the MP suspected of rape while a full investigation is carried out & stop minimising sexual violence. Stand with survivors. #ThisIsNotWorking ([link removed][UNIQID]) [link removed][UNIQID]
