I hope this email finds you well and staying safe! I am writing to ask for your vote for State Senate in the Democratic Primary next Tuesday, August 11.
We are at a pivotal moment in time as a state, as a nation, and as a planet. The experiences of the last several months show us that we cannot go back to business as usual. We must use this unique time as a launch pad to transform Vermont into the thriving, inclusive state we know it can be. And we must resist the calls for austerity that will surely come in the wake of the economic devastation left by COVID-19.
I am running for State Senate to help create systemic change that enables ALL Vermonters to thrive and lead lives of dignity. This is one reason why I have been endorsed by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, who has inspired so many of us for years. I am deeply honored and humbled by his endorsement, as well as that of many other state and community leaders and organizations whose work has helped make Vermont the great little state it is. If elected, my priorities will be what the vast majority of our community has been calling for:
● Economic & Housing Justice: A livable wage - at least $15/hr. Economic recovery from COVID-19. Affordable housing and health care for all. Paid family and medical leave. Tax reform that brings real relief to working families and asks the wealthy to pay their fair share. Restoring the safety net.
● Racial & Social Justice:Criminal justice and police reform. Review state policies and legislation through a racial justice lens. Reinvest in communities of color. Work with people of color, New Americans and the LGBTQ community when crafting policy.
● Climate Action & Environmental Justice: Vermont Green New Deal. Invest in the green economy and clean water. Invest in clean, affordable and accessible public transportation. Hold corporations accountable for their pollution. Ensure a just transition for low-income and vulnerable Vermonters.
● Inclusive & Vibrant Democracy:Include young people and New Americans in policy discussions. Keep corporate money out of Vermont politics. Public financing for state/local elections to create a level playing field.
I am a long-time affordable housing advocate. I have dedicated almost 40 years of my life to public service and helping disadvantaged and marginalized Vermonters. My work in housing, homelessness, and municipal government has provided me with a broad background in many different areas of state and federal policy: community development, social services, mental health, early childhood development, land conservation, criminal justice, energy-efficiency, and budget and tax policy, to name a few.
I am ready to serve Chittenden County and Vermont from day one. My years of state house advocacy have honed my knowledge of the legislative process and helped me forge positive working relationships with policy makers at all levels. In this unprecedented time, we need experienced people who do not need extensive on-the-job training.
