Hi friend,

Did you know that missing one council tax payment can mean receiving a bill for the full year - within a matter of weeks? And on top of that, councils can send bailiffs to collect that debt.

It’s cruel and illogical.

This week is UK Debt Awareness week. This is a great opportunity to inform your local councillors of the harm debt causes, and demand they take action to bring down council tax debt and end bailiff use. Will you email your local councillors?

Yes, I’ll email my local councillors ([link removed])

Debt is a more common problem than people think. According to StepChange, the debt advice charity, 1 in 2 of us will face a debt related challenge in our lifetime. In fact, currently 13 million people in the UK have turned to credit cards just to pay for essential living costs like food and household bills.

How has it got so bad that ordinary people aren’t able to make ends meet? Of course, the pandemic, cost of living crisis and stagnant wages have led to a huge increase in debt, but despite knowing these causes it doesn’t change the reality on the ground - people are just plain struggling.

And once in debt, high interest and hidden fees make it incredibly hard to get out. It’s a silent crisis, with millions feeling stigma from being in debt.

“Most people are not in debt because they live beyond their means, it’s because they are denied the means to live” - Astra Taylor, debt campaigner

That’s why we want to see action to bring down bills, write off unpayable debts and stop people being traumatised by debt collectors like bailiffs.
