Yesterday, August 4th in the early evening, a massive explosion occurred in the port area of Beirut, Lebanon. More than 100 people have been confirmed dead with at least 4,000 reported wounded. Officials have warned that the death toll is certain to rise further. Gratefully, we can report that all of our Mercy Corps team members in Lebanon are safe and accounted for. Around the world, our teams work every day to help communities forge new paths to prosperity in the face of disaster, poverty and crisis. And in emergency moments, they are there to respond to unexpected, unimagined catastrophes like what happened in Lebanon yesterday. Please make an emergency gift to our Humanitarian Response Fund. When disasters like this strike, you can be there with us to help meet survivors with compassion and the critical aid they need right now. Mercy Corps Country Director for Lebanon, George Antoun, shared with us what he’s seeing in Beirut:
Today our humanitarian colleagues in Lebanon began the work to assess damages and the impact of the explosion, and to consider how Mercy Corps can best help — immediately and over the longer term. An estimated 300,000 people are homeless as a result of the explosion and we anticipate that the greatest needs in the coming days will be food, water, shelter and hygiene and sanitation support — even more essential during this COVID‑19 pandemic. Your gift today helps people and families around the world survive in moments of crisis and natural disaster, and build brighter futures for themselves and their communities. Thank you for being there for our global community during times of crisis. Adrienne Karecki, Mercy Corps Chief Development and Marketing Officer |
