John, last night’s elections were a roller coaster.
They were a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when we work together for justice.
And also, that we need to be PREPARED and COMMITTED to work even HARDER to overcome the status quo of a racist and unjust judicial system.
In St. Louis, Kim Gardner stood up against attacks from Police Unions, Trump, and the NRA to be re-elected city prosecutor in a LANDSLIDE victory. She received death threats from white supremacists. Republicans lined up to support her Democratic opponent. But Real Justice supporters made sure they failed. This is a huge victory in ground zero for our movement!
But in Detroit’s Wayne County Victoria Burton Harris fell short of defeating an entrenched incumbent with an appalling record of aggressive prosecution and juvenile incarceration. Victoria ran a tremendous campaign, but even with a national tide of support for judicial reform — it wasn’t enough.
Last night showed us that we need to work even harder to push our movement forward. If you’re with me in this fight, can you make a $5 contribution to help us keep electing strong prosecutors for reform and turn the tide for real justice in this country?Contribute $5
In both of these elections, Real Justice supporters all over the country, and our on-the-ground organizing staff, showed up BIG.
— We powered both campaigns with hundreds of thousands of dollars, especially in the final weeks which helped dramatically increase the campaigns' internet and television advertising budgets to get the word out.
— We organized volunteer phonebanks for Kim, and helped the campaign set up digital outreach, a campaign video, and press.
— We supported Victoria’s campaign digital outreach program and direct voter contact - including a volunteer texting program that sent 229k texts!
For Kim, we defended her position to pull off a MANDATE victory. Victoria actually won in Election Day votes, but lost early votes by a bigger margin.
It shows that while there is a tide of national sentiment toward justice, we need to show up earlier and better to overcome entrenched local incumbents. We may have the wind at our back, but we need to be ready to do the hard work it takes to win.
There are still more Real Justice candidates preparing for tough elections against well-funded, establishment-backed opponents. Trump, his buddies, and even many Democrats, are using every tool at their disposal to stop our movement from gaining steam.
Let’s keep fighting,
Shaun
