Commission on the Status of Women

Attacks on reproductive freedom are crossing borders, and SiX is bringing lawmakers and advocates together to share practical lessons and build stronger strategies.

SiX partnered with Women’s Equality Center, IPAS, and CUNY School of Law Human Rights and Gender Justice clinic on “From Backlash to Resistance: Practical Lessons on Subnational Collaboration Across Borders,” at a side event to the United Nations’ Commission on the Status of Women.

This panel focused on how leaders can respond to backlash with bold, coordinated action. Panelists from the U.S. and Mexico explored how legislators, organizers, and communities can work together across states, cities, and countries to protect rights, strengthen democracy, and build a world where we all can thrive.

The Real Affordability Agenda in the News

SiX’s work to advance the Real Affordability Agenda ([link removed]) is getting national attention. Ida Eskamani, SiX’s senior director, economic justice initiative, spoke with reporters at Fast Company ([link removed]) and the New York Times ([link removed]) about the growing interest from state legislators to take on wealth hoarding and advance policies that make life more affordable.

“The affordability crisis is not an accident,” Eskamani says. “It’s the result of intentional policy choices that protect concentrated wealth over working families. And so we’ve seen a system of ‘trickle down’ economics that rewards wealth hoarding and punishes hard-working people.”

In response, SiX is partnering with the Democracy Security Project to offer a new virtual training series for legislators and legislative staff. The first session on March 23, 2:00 pm ET / 11:00 am PT will cover harassment, work disruptions, and threats at home, in the office, and while traveling. Iowa Representatives Unveil Plan for Supporting Independent Farmers and Ranchers

As part of SiX Action’s Midwest regional organizing strategy, Iowa Representatives J.D. Scholten, Megan Srinivas, and Elinor Levin announced their “Regaining Iowa Farmers’ Independence ([link removed]) ,” a new platform and legislative package supporting independent farmers and ranchers.

The bill package promotes Right to Repair, farmland ownership transparency, fair markets, Country of Origin Labeling, and limits corporate vertical integration.
