Folks -- While schools are looking to reopen this fall, the most important issue is whether our students, teachers and faculty can return to classrooms safely.
President Trump and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos are endangering millions of Americans in their attempt to open schools without a safety plan or funding in place. They forced the Centers for Disease Control to relax its guidelines for school reopening -- and threatened to cut off funding to public schools that do not open.
In Texas, the state is holding on to $7.5 billion in funds from the CARES Act; roughly $1.2 billion of that should have been distributed to school districts. I am calling on our lawmakers to secure these funds for public schools so they have the best chance at opening while keeping students, educators and their families safe.
How can we ask schools to reopen when they aren’t even receiving the necessary funding to do so safely? Our communities need help now. Will you stand with me and sign my petition to demand emergency funding for our public schools?

If we are asking our nation’s young people and educators to return to their classrooms this fall, we have to make sure they are set up with the resources and protective equipment needed. Add your name next to mine to ensure our schools can open safely.
Thank you for speaking up.
