Dear Neighbor,
Last week, I kicked off the first round of District 2 landmarking, initiating a process that will help protect our neighborhood’s history and culture for generations to come. This first round consists of 18 properties throughout the district, including some of the following cherished buildings:

The Presidio Theater at 2336 Chestnut St, which was constructed in 1937 and designed in the Streamline Moderne style of architecture;

The Religious School for Congregation Emanu-El at 1335 Sutter St, which was designed by architect of merit Alfred Henry Jacobs in 1910 and is significant for its association with Rabbi Martin Meyer, an important person in the development of Jewish schools throughout the San Francisco Bay Area;

The Century Club at 1355 Franklin St which was constructed in 1905 and remodeled by Julia Morgan, an architect of merit, in 1914;

The Bridge Theater at 3008 Geary Blvd, which was constructed in 1939 and embodies a thriving adaptive reuse project.
Our city’s Landmark Designation Program
establishes protections for eligible properties and districts, enshrining these historic resources as irreplaceable assets that showcase the best of our past. By receiving a landmark designation, the City codifies protections to preserve and enhance these resources, encouraging their continued use and managing change in the future.
I’m proud to move forward this initial slate of landmark designations, but the work does not stop here.
