John,
Last week, I went to the DNC meeting in San Francisco alongside Our Revolution board members Jane Kleeb, Jim Zogby and Larry Cohen and supported by Our Revolution members who organized tirelessly to collect over 27,000 petition signatures demanding action on climate that we delivered to Democratic Party state chairs.
Because of our hard work, over 50 other DNC members signed on to co-sponsor the resolution calling for the formation of a permanent DNC Environment and Climate Crisis Council to help create party policy and elevate and empower the voices of those most affected by the climate crisis.
The resolution was adopted, and I am proud to serve as the council’s first chairperson.
This is a significant victory for Our Revolution and our movement: A permanent council is crucial and will create the structural change necessary to ensure the DNC and the state parties take real action on the climate crisis. Unfortunately, as you know, the resolution to hold a climate debate was defeated — as was an amended resolution that made it to the floor for a vote by the full DNC.
One thing I want to be clear about is that much of our progress was because Our Revolution DNC members from MI, NE, WY, MD, CA, WA, HI, AK, MO and other states led the way.
Nearly all of these delegates have a seat at the table at the DNC because of Bernie’s 2016 campaign and Our Revolution’s sustained effort to transform the party. Pitch in here to help us continue making our party accountable to the grassroots.
Our effort in San Francisco shows that we can gain power and influence when we organize.
Onward,
Michelle Deatrick
