| Wednesday, August 5 Round Up: SB 899 passes out of the Assembly Housing Committee, NPH advocates for the HEROES act and Housing Resolution 2, our Now-Virtual Annual Conference, & more! |
| | Legislative Updates & NPH Policy Priorities |
| |
|
| After returning from an extended Summer Recess, the Assembly Housing Committee voted to pass SB 899. SB 899 is a critical bill that already has the support of hundreds of faith leaders in California thanks to how it directly addresses housing segregation throughout our state by opening up exclusive communities of opportunity to affordable housing development. SB 899 now faces it's most difficult challenge as it heads to the Assembly Appropriations Committee, and we need your continued support by contacting your local lawmaker and urging them to support SB 899: |
| | We encourage members to join NPH for our Legislative Issues Committee Meeting (via conference call) this Thursday, August 6 to strategize opportunities ahead to continue making progress for affordable housing in California. Click here to register. We're also encouraging members interested in regulatory issues to attend the California Debt Limit Allocation Committee (CDLAC) Meeting on Friday, August 7 (9:00am) where CDLAC will be discussing and choosing from various proposals to overhaul the bond allocation system. |

| | NPH Supports HEROES Act and HR 2 |
| |
|
| Last week NPH published a piece on Medium that offers an overview of the HEROES Act and House Resolution 2, critical federal policy solutions for housing that are awaiting action in the US Senate. Housing is one of the most critical tools we have to address public health, flatten the curve, and eliminate the disparities that COVID has so clearly exposed. The HEROES Act and HR 2 place those goals as top priorities, coming at a critical time as renters face new uncertainties and are losing some existing protections.. Our Senators need a clear demonstration of support and the strength of the Bay Area and all of California behind these solutions. We need you to take 5 minutes to make a critical phone call in support of these bills and show our Senators that the Bay Area is behind affordable housing solutions. Use our sample script and local office contact information at the end of our piece. |

NPH is excited to highlight the growth and continued success of our Bay Area Housing Internship Program (BAHIP) program with the graduation of our Year 2 cohort! BAHIP is a one-year, paid internship program designed to launch college students from low-income communities and communities of color into careers in affordable housing development and project management — by training them in the hard and soft skills of housing leadership development at leading NPH member agencies. In our newly-enriched BAHIP webpages, prospective host agencies and future interns can experience the full breadth and depth of interns’ work in our new portfolios page, and witness the diversity of networks that support them.
