Jack,
As Wisconsin digs out from another blizzard, I hope everyone is staying
safe and warm out there!
Midwestern weather has always been unpredictable, but when extreme
conditions hit, I can't help but think about the reality of climate
change, rising energy costs, and an environment under threat from
corporate polluters.
Right now, Wisconsin imports nearly two-thirds of our renewable power from
other states. And 72% of our electricity still comes from coal and gas —
all of it imported. That means billions of dollars are leaving the state
every year to buy fossil fuel when we should be investing in clean energy
we could produce ourselves.
Our water tells a similar story. Pesticides have been found in 40% of
private wells, and about 100 public water systems are on track to exceed
federal PFAS limits. Families in Marinette and Peshtigo have been on
bottled water for years because a corporation contaminated their supply.
There's $125 million sitting in a trust fund to start the cleanup, but
Republican legislators blocked it— and then tried to use the bill to gut
the DNR's power to go after polluters.
In 1999, Wisconsin was one of the first states in the country to set a
renewable energy standard. We should be leading on this. Instead, we're
falling behind our neighbors. I'm running for governor because Wisconsin
deserves better. And I have a plan to make better possible.
* I'm a proud sponsor of the [ [link removed] ]Climate Accountability Act — a binding
commitment to cut emissions 52% by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by
2050. As governor, I'll fight for 100% clean electricity by 2040.
* I'll create a [ [link removed] ]state green bank — a model that uses public dollars
to attract private investment in solar and efficiency. In Connecticut,
a similar program has [ [link removed] ]generated over $3 billion for the state's
economy.
* I'll direct the DNR to test for [ [link removed] ]PFAS in schools and childcare
centers statewide, and make polluters — not taxpayers — pay for the
cleanup.
