AVFCA's Grassroots Director will Represent California Parents
Affected by the Loss of Religious Exemptions at the Religious Liberty Commission Hearing Today
March 16, 2026: Today, the President’s Religious Liberty Commission will hold a public hearing examining religious liberty in healthcare, including vaccine mandates in schools.
A panel discussing vaccines and schools will take place at 11:10 AM EST , and California families will be represented by the AVFCA team , including Karen, AVFCA’s Grassroots Director, who will testify alongside her daughter , and Christina Hildebrand, who will also be attending the hearing.
Only five individuals were selected to speak on this panel. Karen will be representing parents in California who have been affected by the elimination of religious exemptions for school vaccine mandates. During her testimony, Karen will also reference the AVFCA lawsuit challenging California’s elimination of religious exemptions for school vaccines , helping ensure that the experiences of California families are part of the national conversation about religious liberty and parental rights.

AVFCA is currently engaged in litigation challenging California’s elimination of religious exemptions for school vaccine mandates. The case argues that denying parents any religious exemption violates First Amendment protections for the free exercise of religion and the right of parents to direct the religious upbringing of their children. Recent developments at the U.S. Supreme Court reinforce the importance of these protections, including the Court’s action in Miller v. McDonald , which ordered reconsideration of the case in light of Mahmoud v. Taylor (2025) affirming parental religious rights.
AVFCA remains the only organization in California advancing religious exemptions for K-12 school vaccine requirements through every available avenue . Our work includes litigation challenging the elimination of religious exemptions, ongoing legislative advocacy to restore these rights, coalition building with faith leaders and organizations, federal engagement on religious liberty protections, and direct assistance to individuals navigating religious exemption requests.
We are grateful for the opportunity to ensure the voices of California families are heard.
