So much of the mess we’re in could have been avoided but Trump’s gross incompetence and negligence have caused needless death, illness, and untold strain to millions across the country.
We cannot allow the avoidable mistakes that were made during the coronavirus pandemic to be repeated in the future – we must have a plan to deploy at the onset of these public health crises.
The United States had a task force established during the Obama administration that could have been activated immediately to begin deploying the federal government’s response to the coronavirus, but as has been widely reported, the Trump administration dismantled it soon after Trump was sworn into office.
Pandemics are accelerating as a result of corporate globalization, climate change, and systemic racism. But there are solutions. With the right policies in place, we can bring the nation and the world to a safer and healthier “new normal” that heals America, coordinates with our allies, and protects the world from the impacts of life-threatening global diseases.
A real pandemic plan is essential to stop this outbreak now, support a just recovery, and take the international action necessary to limit the impact of future pandemics. We cannot stop a pandemic anywhere until we stop it everywhere.
We must approach the next pandemic with a holistic approach in order to stem the worst effects that ripple across our health care system, economy, and populace.
