Senate Republicans have failed to pass a COVID-19 aid bill to help people made vulnerable by the pandemic. And as Trump continues to sabotage election security by smearing vote-by-mail, kneecapping the Post Office, and claiming election rigging, Senate Republicans continue to stand by his words. By continuing to stymie aid negotiations, by enabling Trump’s antidemocratic impulses, they make it more and more clear that they have turned their backs on Americans in our time of need.

It falls on us to protect ourselves and demand that our Democratic Members of Congress stand up for us.

Pressure your Members of Congress to pass the HEROES Act.

Two and a half months ago, the Democratic House passed the HEROES Act to deal with the pandemic-caused health and economic crises. Though it didn't include everything we wanted, it's a good bill that provided the essentials. But the Republican Senate did nothing. Now extended unemployment benefits have expired—leaving 17 million newly out-of-work people unable to pay their bills. The eviction/foreclosure moratorium that kept tens of millions of families from being thrown out into the street has ended.

Republicans recently responded with their proposed HEALS Act, which provides yet more tax breaks and benefits for the wealthy but does nothing of substance for the vast majority of Americans. Yet Republicans cannot even agree with each other on this effort; McConnell estimates fifteen to twenty Republican senators will not vote for any new relief bill at all. This means that no bill can pass the Senate without a significant number of Democratic votes. Consequently, the Senate Democrats have strong negotiating leverage—if they stand firm and fight.

Contact your senators ([link removed][UNIQID]) and tell them to do everything in their power to pass the HEROES Act!

Protect tenants: support state bill AB 1436

Since Governor Newsom declared a State of Emergency on March 4, 2020, millions of Californians have lost their jobs or significant income due to COVID-19. In recognition of this situation, on April 6, 2020, the California Judicial Council adopted an emergency rule to effectively halt evictions; this rule is set to expire ninety days after the Governor’s COVID-19 State of Emergency ends.
Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, many California tenants struggled to pay rent: over half of renters were considered rent-burdened, paying over 30 percent of their income on rent. The tremendous surge in unemployment caused by the COVID-19 emergency has made this drastically worse.
Without action to prevent evictions, hundreds of thousands of renters areat risk of being evicted and becoming homeless. ([link removed][UNIQID]) AB 1436 will protect them.

AB 1436 is heading to the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bill, authored by Assemblymember Chiu, will prevent evictions and provide security to over 18 million tenants in California.

Call State Senator Wiener ([link removed][UNIQID]) and tell him to vote YES on AB 1436.

Protect women’s rights

We've asked people to call/tweet/email about the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) in the past—in fact, Indivisible SF has signed on as a supporting organization. As some states have used the pandemic as yet another excuse to limit access to abortion, it's time to speak up again and insist that the House vote on this critical bill that prohibits medically unnecessary restrictions on abortion care and protects people's right to make their own decisions about their own bodies.

Call your Representative ([link removed][UNIQID]) and ask them to vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act.

** Getting out the vote and securing elections
------------------------------------------------------------
Trump and the Republicans have failed America in crisis after crisis, and with the election looming, they find themselves deeply unpopular. But this does not mean they will just go away. It’s becoming increasingly obvious that Trump and the Republicans will do everything to suppress the vote, sabotage election security, and contest the results.

To combat this, we need to do two things: get out the vote for the biggest landslide possible and demand our Members of Congress do everything possible to secure the elections.

Drumbeat to protect elections
Today, we’re starting a Drumbeat action. We’re asking our members to contact their members of Congress every day to ask them to publicly and vocally commit to securing our elections and to follow through with every power they have.

Check out our action script ([link removed][UNIQID]) for sample messages to call in, email, or tweet to your members of Congress!
