Updates from the Young Center

With new regulations that will allow the indefinite detention of migrant children and families, continued family separation, and a renewed effort to reinstate the government's asylum ban 2.0, the Young Center is fighting consecutive attacks on immigrant children's rights. We recently published a report on CBP's screening of Mexican children at the border, why it has failed, and why it must not be used as a model for the treatment of all children.

From Young Center Executive Director Maria Woltjen: If you do nothing else today, I hope you’ll read a story written by my colleague, my treasured friend, Jajah Wu. It will make you cry. It will make you angry. It will make you thankful there are people like Jajah fighting for immigrant kids. I met Jajah in 2006, when she was a law student at the University of Chicago and the Young Center was just getting off the ground. After law school, Jajah went off to practice at a firm, but we wooed her back and she took her place as a Young Center attorney. Scores of students and volunteer advocates who are now spread out across the country were taught by Jajah. They learned from Jajah to be fierce advocates, to listen, and to hear children's voices and stories.

The Young Center works with the most vulnerable unaccompanied and separated immigrant children in federal custody so their voices are heard and their best interests are protected. We also advocate for an immigration system that treats children as children. Click here to donate and support our work.
