The Nanny State of the Nation
Monday 10th August 2020
6.00-7.00pm

Marketing Week ([link removed]) , 27 July 2020:

The government has unveiled plans to introduce a ban on junk food advertising across TV and online prior to the 9pm watershed in the UK. Number 10 is also debating whether to outlaw adverts for high fat, salt and sugar products online altogether.

From now on, ‘Buy one get one free’ deals on unhealthy food will be banned and there will be restrictions on where HFSS products can be promoted in store, including a ban on chocolates, crisps and sweets being sold at the checkout.

Restaurant, cafe or takeaway chains with more than 250 employees will be required to label the calories of their meals on the menu and the government has launched a consultation on plans to provide the same information for alcoholic drinks.

Sound familiar?

Meanwhile anti-smoking campaigners continue to press the Government to announce the next steps that will help England become 'smoke free' by 2030.

Smokefree Action, an umbrella group campaigning to 'make smoking history', has published a 'Roadmap to a Smokefree 2030 ([link removed]) ' and a group of anti-smoking peers recently urged the Government ([link removed]) to explain 'how they plan to achieve their objective of making England smoke-free by 2030.'

On Monday 10th August you are invited to join us ([link removed]) when we shall be addressing both issues – the battle against obesity and the war on tobacco – and discussing how far government should intervene to 'save' us from ourselves and 'protect' other people.

We are delighted to announce that our panel of speakers includes:

Claire Fox (above): director, Academy of Ideas; founder, Battle of Ideas festival; former MEP; regular guest on Newsnight, Politics Live, Any Questions and The Moral Maze; recently awarded a peerage.

Baroness Bennett of Manor Castle (below): former journalist on The Times and the Bangkok Post, and editor of the Guardian Weekly; leader, Green Party of England and Wales, 2012-2016; member of the House of Lords since October 2019.

Brian Monteith: former spokesman for Forest in Scotland; former MSP and MEP; columnist on the Scotsman; former editor, The Free Society; author, 'The Bully State: The End of Tolerance'.

The event will be chaired by Rob Lyons, former deputy editor of the online magazine Spiked and author of 'Panic on a Plate: How Society Developed An Eating Disorder'.
