John,
This week was filled with policy discussions at our annual Republican
Conference meeting, but my office and I continued working on issues that are
important to families across western Minnesota. From introducing legislation to
protect whistleblowers and fighting for our farmers, I am focused on delivering
results. Here is a quick update on what I’ve been working on.
I introduced the Federal Funds Whistleblower Protection Extension Act with
the support of my colleagues, Congressman Brad Finstad and Congressman Pete
Stauber. My legislation seeks to safeguard taxpayer dollars by expanding
federal whistleblower protections to state and local government employees,
contractors, and subcontractors who report fraud, waste, or abuse involving
federal money. It also creates criminal penalties for any government official
who retaliates against them. Right now, if you're a state or local government
employee and you blow the whistle on the misuse of federal funds, there is no
federal law that guarantees you won't be fired, demoted, or blacklisted for
speaking up, like we’ve uncovered in Minnesota. Recently, nearly thirty
whistleblowers bravely came forward to tell Congress they were ignored,
retaliated against, and in some cases surveilled by their own government for
raising concerns about fraud in programs meant to feed children and care for
the disabled. Federal prosecutors estimate that as much as $9 billion was
bilked from Minnesota's social services system while Governor Walz and Attorney
General Ellison allegedly looked the other way and punished the people who
tried to sound the alarm. Minnesota showed us what happens when whistleblowers
have nowhere to turn, so this legislation makes sure no state can sweep fraud
under the rug by silencing the people brave enough to expose it.
I signed onto a letter with my colleagues urging President Trump to press
Japan's Prime Minister to finally open their market to U.S. fresh potatoes.
This issue has dragged on for over thirty years. Japan keeps blocking our
potatoes with zero scientific basis, and our growers are tired of waiting.
Their market represents $150 million a year in new exports and thousands of
jobs across potato-growing communities, including in Minnesota, where the Red
River Valley is one of the biggest potato-growing regions in the country. With
commodity prices down and input costs through the roof, our farmers need every
market we can pry open. Japan buys fresh potatoes from countries all over the
Indo-Pacific region, so there's no reason U.S. growers should be locked out.
President Trump has the leverage to get this done when the Prime Minister
visits, and I wanted to make sure he knows Congress has his back on it. Our
farmers grow the best potatoes in the world, and it's past time Japan's
consumers have access to them.
Thursday was National Working Moms Day, a chance to recognize the incredible
women who balance careers and their family every single day. Mothers are the
backbone of families everywhere, yet too often, the policies from Washington
make life harder for them rather than easier. That is why I am proud to author
legislation like theMore Opportunities for Moms to Succeed (MOMS) Act, which
provides support to new and expectant mothers, empowering women to choose life.
Last year’sWorking Families Tax Cut, the ‘big beautiful bill,’ extended and
expanded tax cuts for working, middle-class families, especially a doubling of
the child tax credit. Federal policy should support every mother in her work to
provide for her family’s well-being and success.
As always, thank you for your continued trust and support. Don’t hesitate to
reach out if you have any questions or need assistance with anything.
With gratitude,
