When enhanced unemployment expired on Friday night, the Senate wasn't even in D.C. to stop it.
30 million people lost this critical lifeline along with federal eviction protections on the eve of rent being due. We are facing a potential tidal wave of evictions here in the district and across the country, which would devastate families.
Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump's best proposal? Slashing enhanced unemployment benefits by $400 a week, a massive two-thirds cut. It's unbelievably cruel to the tens of millions of people who've lost their jobs since March due to the pandemic.
It's time to secure the real relief our communities need. It's time to pass the Heroes Act -- a necessary coronavirus relief package that will provide the assistance that families need at this difficult time and additional funding for the testing and tracing efforts we need to finally curb this pandemic.
Please, sign your name to our petition to demand the Senate pass the Heroes Act now. We need to show Mitch McConnell that the people will not stand for his partisan procrastination any longer -- not when so many are in pain.
Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives passed the Heroes Act two and a half months ago. The Senate has had plenty of time to take action, too.
But Mitch McConnell has refused to pass -- or even call a vote on -- this legislation in the Senate.
I know what it's like to wonder how you'll pay the bills. My own family struggled after my parents split, my mom refusing to let my father's abuse continue. We faced housing and food insecurity. But we made it through thanks to the support of our community.
Now, I know how politics is played. But right now, Mitch McConnell is playing politics with people's lives.
At this time of national crisis, more than ever before, we need our elected officials to get past the partisanship and do their jobs. The stakes couldn't be any higher.
