Dear Friend, Good news! Last week a federal judge in New York issued nationwide injunctions against the Trump administration’s “public charge” wealth test, including one in our case Make the Road New York, et al. v. Pompeo, et al. The court rightly recognized that the coronavirus pandemic has exposed Trump’s racially-motivated wealth test for what it is: cruel, immoral, and hazardous to the safety and well-being of the nation. Let’s be clear: This was a major victory, but the fight is not over. In the past several months it has become obvious that we are all interdependent, that the health and safety of immigrant communities is crucial for all of us. Immigrants care for our sick loved ones, feed our families, and keep our supply chains going, while President Trump’s wealth tests deter immigrant families from accessing the resources they need to stay healthy and to thrive. Remember, Trump’s public charge rules impose much tighter restrictions on who might ultimately be eligible for U.S. citizenship, based on whether they’ve accessed basic supports any of us may need during this crisis. The rules have scared people away from accessing help they need to remain healthy and to thrive. The fear generated by Trump’s public charge wealth tests have made it necessary for our teams to work around the clock informing people about their rights and challenging the public charge rule in every way possible. Friend, with your support, we can continue our fight in the courtroom, to ensure that communities can access the basics they need to stay healthy. Will you chip in $5 to support our work defending immigrant families? The truth is, Trump’s immigration wealth tests have worsened the COVID-19 pandemic by deterring immigrants and their families from accessing the resources they need to stay safe and to thrive. We must join together to take care of everyone in our communities, including the immigrants who are essential to our national recovery from this pandemic. Your partnership will help ensure that immigrants have a voice at this critical time. |
