Hi John,
On April 7, Wisconsin voters will decide the future direction of our state’s highest court, and Judge Maria Lazar’s record should concern anyone who cares about clean water, accountability, and the rule of law. That’s why we need your help to send postcards to voters before this critical election. [[link removed]]
Who is Maria Lazar?
Lazar is a member of the Federalist Society, the same ideological pipeline that has produced some of the most extreme judges in the country. While she attempts to cloak herself in the language of neutrality, her decisions tell a very different story.
Again and again, Lazar has sided with polluting corporate interests over the health and safety of Wisconsin communities.
One of the clearest examples came in a case involving PFAS, the toxic “forever chemicals” contaminating drinking water across our state. When the case came before the Court of Appeals, Lazar ruled that the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) could not hold corporate polluters accountable for contaminating water with PFAS.
In other words, she sided with polluters over the people of Wisconsin.
Her ruling would have made it dramatically harder for the state to protect families from toxic contamination, but it was later overturned by the Wisconsin Supreme Court. The decision shows how dangerous Lazar’s approach to the law would be if she were elected to the state’s highest court.
A justice with that record would be a blank check for corporate polluters and special interests, a sieve through which harmful federal policies could easily pass through. And in a moment when federal policies already threaten environmental protections and democratic institutions, Wisconsin cannot afford a Supreme Court justice who would simply rubber stamp those interests.
That is why this race matters.
Judge Chris Taylor is running to ensure the Wisconsin Supreme Court remains fair, independent and committed to protecting the rights of all Wisconsinites. She currently serves on the Wisconsin Court of Appeals and previously served on the Dane County Circuit Court. Before joining the bench, she spent nearly a decade in the Wisconsin Legislature, where she built a reputation as an effective leader who worked across the aisle to pass meaningful legislation.
Electing Judge Chris Taylor would help ensure a pro-democracy, pro-conservation majority on the court that lasts until at least 2030 – a critical safeguard at a time when courts are playing an increasingly important role in protecting constitutional rights and holding powerful interests accountable.
But we cannot win without reaching voters across Wisconsin, and that is where you come in.
We recently launched a campaign to send handwritten postcards reminding voters about this crucial election. Postcards are one of the most effective ways to connect with voters, and they are something anyone can do from home or with friends.
Here are a few ways you can help:
* Write postcards yourself. We will send you a packet with postcards, stamps, addresses and instructions. Sign up here. [[link removed]]
* Host a postcard party. Gather friends, neighbors or fellow volunteers and write together. We will provide the materials and guidance you need. Host a party here. [[link removed]]
* Join a local postcard event. Volunteers across Wisconsin are organizing gatherings in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for events happening near you!
Every handwritten postcard helps remind a voter that this election matters. There is so much on the line this spring – our democracy, our environment and the ability of courts to stand up to corporate power and dangerous policies. If we work together, we can make sure Wisconsin’s Supreme Court continues to protect the people of this state, not the highest bidders.
Thanks for being a conservation voter,
