Friends,

It's been a big week.

Last Wednesday, 350 activists organized a bike rally in front of the State House in support of the House’s 2050 Roadmap bill, which passed late Friday night with many crucial amendments included.

One amendment contained most of the former Environmental Justice bill. It's a landmark step towards ensuring that environmental policy prioritizes those who have shared a disproportionately high burden of pollution and environmental degradation.

And there were victories beyond Massachusetts. We have exciting news from 350 NH: the planned Granite Bridge pipeline has been cancelled!

People power works. Thank you so much to everyone who helped push for the House to finally pass major climate legislation, and to everyone who's working for climate justice more broadly.

We won't stop here. Today we're submitting signatures to the Secretary of State’s office for ballot initiatives supporting 100% renewable energy in MA by 2040 and transparency in committee votes, where many important bills are killed in darkness. Stay tuned for more.

In solidarity,

Sam Payne

House Passes Roadmap Climate Omnibus Bill

Last Friday, the Massachusetts House of Representatives passed the 2050 Roadmap bill. It updates the Global Warming Solutions Act and commits the state to creating a roadmap to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. The House also passed some key amendments, one of which includes most of the environmental justice bill—and passed with overwhelming support!

It's a testament to the power of grassroots organizing and coalition building. Though this bill has its shortcomings, it's a huge step forward for a Legislature that hasn't passed significant climate protection laws for years. None of this would have happened without pressure from grassroots groups like 350 Mass and our coalition partners. Without you.

What's next? Contact your representative, tell them you were pleased to see them vote in favor of the Roadmap (if they did), and that you would be even happier if they advocated for further climate action in order to bring MA’s plan in line with science. The bill goes into a conference committee with the Senate (S.2500), with a final bill expected sometime in the next few months. We'll keep fighting, and we'll keep you updated on how to help.

Solidarity Opportunities

A Successful Invest in Our Recovery Campaign Launch: As our state responds to the pandemic and resultant revenue shortfall, we shouldn't make severe budget cuts that would worsen the effects of the downturn and harm people and communities already disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. Last week, Raise Up Mass launched their Invest in Our Recovery campaign, a movement demanding that corporations pay their fair share as the state recovers. See a news story about the launch here and learn more here.
