Friend,
Over the last few months, our series of online discussions has explored how COVID-19 has laid bare the urgent need to decarcerate our jails and prisons, decriminalize all drugs, and prioritize the health and safety of people who use drugs.
Please RSVP to join us for the final conversation “Rethinking Policing and Surveillance in the Post-COVID-19 Era” which will take place over Zoom this Thursday, August 6, from 2-4pm ET.
To slow the spread of COVID-19, some communities considered temporary changes in policing practices, criminal courts, jail systems, and community supervision. While some localities modestly reduced arrests and released some incarcerated individuals, many emergency decarceration efforts have fallen short and drug arrests have widely persisted.
Join us as we discuss how common policing strategies may exacerbate the public health risks of the epidemic, how the crisis could lead to increased use of surveillance technologies, and how ending drug war policing and surveillance could enhance public health and safety.
Register here to join the conversation this Thursday. And please visit this page for recordings of every discussion in the series.
A special thank you goes out to all the incredible speakers and attendees that participated on these important calls.
Together, we’re committed making the most of this critical moment while advancing drug policies grounded in science, compassion, health and human rights.
Sincerely,
Grey Gardner
Senior Staff Attorney
