Hi John!
This year’s Women’s History Month theme is “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future.” As I thought about what this means to me, I thought about the women who have come before me. The ones who marched, organized, and refused to be silent so that someone like me could one day serve as Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut.
I don't take that for granted. Especially now.
Because in today’s political climate, we are being reminded that the progress we've made is never guaranteed. The fights our mothers and grandmothers won are being relitigated right now in statehouses and courtrooms across the country. Rights once considered settled are now being questioned.
Here in Connecticut, we are making deliberate decisions to shape a future that supports women. We have acted to protect reproductive freedom, expand paid family and medical leave, strengthen equal pay protections, and invest in affordable childcare and maternal health.
The women who came before us did not assume progress would sustain itself. They worked to protect it, and we must do the same.
This month, I hope you will join me not only in celebrating the women who shaped our past, but in continuing the work that will shape our future.
With resolve,
Susan Bysiewicz
Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut
