Dear Anonymous,
Amazing news! The Great American Outdoors Act is now much more than an idea; it's a law. It will ensure that we make new, significant investments in America's public lands, from iconic national parks to local hiking trails.
The biggest beneficiary of the new law is the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), which has supported at least one project in nearly every county in every state across America, conserving more than 2 million acres of public land.[1]
And now, LWCF will be able to continue preserving our public lands for generations to come. The Great American Outdoors Act guarantees that LWCF receives its full $900 million annually, and funds a backlog of long-overdue maintenance projects on our public lands.
With the help of supporters like you, Environment Colorado and our national network have advocated for years to make this historic moment possible. We've sent tens of thousands of messages to Congress and the White House in support of the Great American Outdoors Act, helping to build overwhelming and bipartisan support.
Our national network's staff have lobbied members of Congress on Capitol Hill for full and permanent funding of LWCF, launched billboard campaigns across several states, and gathered photo petitions from supporters across the country. After the COVID-19 crisis hit, we sent face masks to every member of Congress with the words, "Parks are essential. #FundLWCF." We also partnered with members of Congress and local officials to publish op-eds in local papers and hold events highlighting places in need of our protection.
To push the Great American Outdoors Act over the finish line, we held a major day of action in Washington, D.C. When the COVID-19 crisis made that impossible, we switched most meetings to phone: Our advocates held 55 remote meetings and calls with key congressional staff to rally support for the bill.
Members of Congress from both parties deserve our thanks, as do the advocates who helped get this bill over the finish line. Anonymous, I want to thank you as well, for standing with us, for urging your members of Congress to pass this bill, and for giving us the resources that make all of our work possible.
Sincerely,
Hannah Collazo
State Director
