Dear John,

“[The police] hit us, threw us in a van, kidnapped us, and eventually let us out
with a court date. They infringed on our First Amendment rights, and we were
arrested without being read our rights.”

These are the harrowing words of a protester in New York who recently spoke with
Amnesty International.

John, scenes like this are happening all across the
country — from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine. This morning, Amnesty
released a distressing new report, “The World is Watching: Mass Violations by U.S. Police of Black Lives Matter
Protesters' Rights,” * exposing gross human rights violations by U.S. law enforcement officers of Black Lives Matter protesters, journalists, legal observers, and medics
across the country, over several weeks between May and June 2020.

We’re moving quickly to distribute the report to government officials on the
local, state, and federal levels — and to demand an official response to the
report’s key recommendations. But we need your help. Urge your governor and the Trump Administration to use their power to stop
police from violating the human rights of Black Lives Matter protesters.

Peaceful protesters are raising their voices, responding to the tragic killings
of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and other Black people in America, but law
enforcement agencies are trampling their rights — and even their bodies.

Among the abuses our team has documented are beatings, the misuse of teargas and
pepper spray, and the inappropriate and, at times indiscriminate, firing of
projectiles including sponge rounds and rubber bullets.

John, enough is enough. Our elected leaders MUST be
held accountable for failing to protect the right to protest. They must enact
systemic changes that protect and respect Black lives. Please: Help apply pressure for change — send a message to your governor and
the Trump administration now.

In these tenuous times, Amnesty is holding the line. With your help, we’ll
continue to track, expose, and fight against each and every attack on our human
rights.

We’ve been here before — and we’ve won. For 59 years, Amnesty has been a global force for human
rights: investigating abuses, mobilizing a worldwide movement to demand change,
reforming laws, and speaking truth to power.

But we can’t rest on our laurels. Join us now and demand that your governor and the Trump administration stop
human rights violations by law enforcement officers immediately.

We have the facts. We have the harrowing testimonials of abuses. The time is
now.

As we continue to distribute our report far and wide and demand accountability
from our leaders for these abuses, we'll alert you to ways you can keep fighting
for human rights.

Sincerely,

Justin Mazzola
Deputy Director of Research
Amnesty International USA
