GOOD MORNING John,
At the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) and Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence (Ed Fund), we are committed to reducing gun violence in all its forms and ensuring that equity is a core tenant of our work. We recognize that there is an immediate way to begin exercising our responsibility to make our country more equitable and safe for all Americans, and look forward to working toward this goal with our partners. We hope you will join us.
In order to share the good work CSGV and the Ed Fund have been doing, we are sending out a monthly update with articles and press featuring our staff. ANNOUNCING OUR NEW ED FUND WEBSITE!
New Website Provides Vital Gun Violence Prevention Resources ([link removed])
The Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence's new website compiles public health research, data, and evidence-based policy recommendations to address the American gun violence epidemic.
Each "Learn" page includes a downloadable "Quick Facts" section summarizing the content, in-depth analysis of each topic, a recommendations section, and a section containing additional research, materials, and other resources related to each topic. We will also continue to add resources and pages over the coming months.
For decades, the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence has been at the forefront of innovative change and solutions to reduce gun deaths and injuries. As a public health think tank in gun violence prevention, our goal is to continue to collect and translate research and data to reduce gun violence in all its forms -- community gun violence, gun suicide, unintentional shootings, high profile mass tragedies, and more.
We hope that this website will be utilized to educate the public and identify public health solutions that policymakers and communities can use to make gun violence rare and abnormal.
STATEMENTS & PRESS RELEASES
Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Applauds Passage of H.R. 7617 ([link removed])
(July 31, 2020) "The minibus includes historic investments for gun violence prevention research. The Fiscal Year 2020 budget included $25 million for firearm injury and mortality prevention research split evenly between the National Institute of Health (NIH) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). H.R. 7617 more than doubles that investment by providing $25 million for research at the NIH and $25 million for research at the CDC. Additionally, the minibus includes Representative Robin Kelly's amendment to add an additional $5 million for research, bringing the total for gun violence prevention research to $55 million."
The Death of an American Icon: Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Mourns Death of John Lewis ([link removed])
(July 18, 2020) "John Lewis was the greatest of America. His towering legacy drives our mission of nonviolence and pursuit of a more perfect union. The work of gun violence prevention -- the work that we do every single day -- it is rooted in the ideals of Congressman John Lewis...His incredible legacy will be exalted for the rest of American history. It is now up to us to continue to fight, to continue to march, to continue to make good trouble. He showed us the way. It is our responsibility to live up to the America that John Lewis believed in -- and never stopped fighting for. Our entire world is a better place because of John Robert Lewis. He now belongs to the ages."
Virginia Background Checks: Background Checks Bill Upheld by Virginia Court ([link removed])
(July 14, 2020) "Reducing access to firearms by persons under 21 is not only consistent with the Second Amendment, as other courts have found, it can also be an important tool to reduce firearm suicide, which Virginia experiences about two times every single day on average. To exempt young adults from going through a background check prior to a purchase doesn't make any sense. We are hopeful that steps are taken to correct this through the judicial and legislative processes."
BLOGS & OP-EDS
Opinion: State activists proved that progress on gun violence is possible, Senior Director of Advocacy Lori Haas featured in the Virginian Pilot ([link removed])
"Change is possible, and this month it came to Virginia. On July 1, more than 13 years since the shooting at Virginia Tech, some of our nation's strongest gun violence prevention laws went into effect in the home state of the National Rifle Association. If this kind of change can happen in Virginia, it can happen anywhere."

'We Should Have a Handle on This by Now.' As Inner-City Neighborhoods See a Surge in Gun Violence, These Are the Changes Community Leaders Say They Need, TIME ([link removed])
"In inner-city communities, you often see high levels of poverty [and] a lack of economic opportunity for people who have been systematically disenfranchised by the criminal justice system," says Josh Horwitz, Executive Director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. "When you add the easy access to firearms, that's when you have this grinding daily gun violence."
Colorado Ceasefire says red flag law used 'within the bounds of projected need', RealVail ([link removed])
Nineteen states and the District of Columbia have ERPO laws, including Colorado. Colorado's law is unique in that the state pays legal costs of the respondent in hearings for a full 365-day ERPO. Colorado's legislation was originally conceived in May 2016, during a workshop co-hosted by Colorado Ceasefire, Mental Health Colorado and the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence, where law enforcement, mental health professionals, policy makers and others learned of the concept and its effectiveness in other states. The bill was signed into law in April 2019 and became effective January 1, 2020.
