It's Monday, August 3.

** New Phase
------------------------------------------------------------
“The new phase” of the coronavirus pandemic that White House coronavirus task force coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx discussed on Sunday ([link removed]) refers to areas that are experiencing community spread, and that’s harder to fight than contained outbreaks, Dr. Anthony Fauci said Monday, as CNN reports ([link removed]) .

** Senate Stalemate Continues
------------------------------------------------------------
With negotiations over a new coronavirus relief package stalled, Senate GOP leaders and the White House are searching for ways to ramp up the pressure on Democrats after federal unemployment benefits lapsed for millions of Americans. The two sides are clashing over unemployment insurance, with Democrats seeking to extend a $600-per-week federal benefit into 2021, while Republicans want to dramatically scale back the payment, as
Politico reports ([link removed] ) .

** Tik Tok Deal
------------------------------------------------------------
President Trump confirmed Monday he is open to a deal in which Microsoft ([link removed]) or another U.S. company buys the video-sharing app TikTok, but said the government should receive payment for clearing a purchase, as the

** Critical Quote
------------------------------------------------------------

** “Crazy Nancy Pelosi said horrible things about Dr. Deborah Birx, going after her because she was too positive on the very good job we are doing on combatting the China Virus, including Vaccines & Therapeutics. In order to counter Nancy, Deborah took the bait & hit us. Pathetic!”
------------------------------------------------------------
—President Donald Trump

** iDeas Lab
------------------------------------------------------------
Recent updates to CSIS's Southeast Asia Covid-19 Tracker ([link removed]) show a substantial gap between the mortality rate of the top two countries, Indonesia and the Philippines, and the rest of the region.

This time of year is sacred for fans of the Grateful Dead. It’s known as “The Daze Between” because Jerry Garcia was born on August 1 (so was I by the way), and died on August 9. Deadheads celebrate these days as a tribute to Jerry with music of course, story-telling, merchandise, and much more ([link removed] ) :

“Daze Between” is actually a riff off of the last great song written by Garcia and Robert Hunter “The Days Between.”

I’m really enjoying the celebration this week, so in that spirit here’s a great clip ([link removed]) of “Uncle John’s Band” filmed at Winterland in ’74, it’s an outtake from the “Grateful Dead Movie”.
