Hi friend,

“I missed one council tax payment, then I owed £2,800 and had bailiffs at my door”[1]

It’s a story we’re hearing time and time again. People are being forced into debt because of our regressive council tax system and then being harassed by bailiffs.

Missing one council tax payment can mean receiving a bill for the full year within a matter of weeks, leaving people on low incomes the worst affected.

And to cap it all off council tax is going to go up soon by almost 5% in most boroughs, forcing more people into debt.

With rates going up and local elections happening in hundreds of councils across the country this spring, it’s time we told our local councillors that we want to see action to bring down council tax debt and end bailiff use. Can you help raise this issue with your local representative?

Since we launched our campaign calling on councils to stop using bailiffs to collect council tax debt, we’ve had a brilliant response. Thousands of you have signed petitions and raised this issue with your local MPs. Now we want to take the issue directly to councillors.

We want them to agree that they’ll support an end to bailiff use for council tax debt collection and bring in new measures to help people to get out of debt.

Council tax debt has gone through the roof during the cost of living crisis, 4.4 million people are now in debt, over a million more than the year before. And councils have repeatedly turned to bailiffs, despite the fact that they are often ineffective and can cause severe stress and trauma for people in debt.

We know there’s a better way and we want our councillors to sit up, take notice and ban bailiffs for good.

Whether or not you have an election in your area, now is great time to raise this issue with your local councillors as most councils will be bringing in a near 5% increase in council tax over the next few months. Its crucial we stop using bailiffs before more and more people are forced into debt by this change.
