Tomorrow is Primary Election Day in Michigan. And it’s not just critical to re-electing Rashida and sending her back to Congress to continue fighting for us.

It’s also the first real test of Michigan’s new, inclusive voting laws (including absentee voting for anyone who wants it and same-day registration), which have resulted in a surge in vote by mail requests across the state and district.

More people are planning to vote than ever before. So far, 65% of absentee ballots have been returned to clerks’ offices, but a ton of people are still planning to vote tomorrow, despite the pandemic.

To ensure every vote is counted and that no voter suppression occurs, we’re stationing lawyers and volunteers throughout Rashida’s district to be our eyes and ears on the ground.

We know that wealthy developers, corporate-backed PACs, and right-wing groups are working to defeat Rashida. They want to continue to prop up an unjust status quo that enables injustice, environmental racism, and a corporate takeover of our democracy.

But we’re fighting back―making sure the people’s voices are heard and every vote is counted, whether they’re cast on Election Day or cast early by absentee ballot.

Our township and city clerks have never before contended with so many absentee ballots, nor held in-person voting in the time of a pandemic. Our new laws enable more people to vote than ever before―which is great, but since it's the first time they're being put to use (and during a pandemic!), they could overwhelm our state's election infrastructure if not implemented well.

And with Michigan being a battleground state in November’s general election, we need to ensure that tomorrow’s primary goes smoothly and that our township and city clerks are prepared for even more people to vote on and before November 3rd.
