Works to begin on reopening Lister Gate walkway at Broadmarsh Centre
*"A Message from City Council Leader, Cllr David Mellen:"*
Cllr David Mellen, leader of Nottingham City Council
I am pleased that steps are being taken to reopen the Lister Gate walkway which connects Collin Street and Lister Gate through the Broadmarsh Centre. Following intus administration, they closed the walkway for health and safety reasons. When the lease to the Broadmarsh Centre site was disclaimed to the City Council, we said our first priority was to reopen this walkway safely and as quickly as possible, and were now in a position to do following extensive and necessary structural assessment of the site. The Lister Gate walkway is an important through route for the city and its closure has been inconvenient for a lot of people. We have had to balance making sure the walkway is safe with the need to get this public right of way reopen and we are now in a position where we can begin work to do just that as people are coming back into Nottingham after the COVID pandemic.

*Guidance on travelling by car*
Nottingham skyline
As more businesses re-open and people go back to work or go to enjoy leisure facilities it is important to keep in mind the rules and guidance for travelling. While there has been much publicity around the need to wear face masks on public transport and lots is being done to promote walking and cycling, I wanted to highlight the rules for those who need to travel by car. Those travelling by car should only do so with people from their household or within their support bubble, Outside of this try avoiding sharing cars with other people, but if you must then make sure you:
* Share the transport with the same people each time
* Keep to small groups of people at any one time
* Open windows for ventilation
* Clean your car between journeys using standard cleaning products - make sure you clean door handles and other areas that people may touch
* Ask the driver and passengers to wear a face covering.

The Council has seen estimated costs and lost income due to Covid-19 soar to 87.9 million since the pandemic began as it has stepped up to care for older and vulnerable people and provide PPE while at the same time income has been lost from leisure centres, trade waste services, car parks and many other areas. Despite Government promising to stand shoulder to shoulder with local authorities, to date the Government has failed to meet its pledge to fully cover the cost of Covid. Nottingham has only received 19.823 million plus a further 3.723million confirmed as part of tranche 3 of extra Government funding so far, just 27% of the total cost of Covid, leaving a major hole in the Councils finances.The current crisis comes on top of a decade of austerity which has seen Government funding for the City Council cut by over 100 million This has meant that difficult decisions have had to be made in order to meet the legal requirement to balance the budget in the current year. As a consequence the Council has had to make a series of in-year budget saving and a consultation process is currently taking place on the proposals worth of 12,5 million efficiencies, service redesigns, increased charges and budget cuts. These will have an impact on local services so it is important we hear from you about what you think the councils priorities should be and you think the needs of our city are - [link removed] [ [link removed] ]
