Rep. Omar deserves another two years.

Indivisibles,

We’re a week away from Minnesota’s Primary on Tuesday, August 11, and we wanted to make sure we endorsed a candidate who brings bold, progressive ideas to the halls of Congress. That’s why we’re so excited to announce our endorsement of Representative Ilhan Omar in the Minnesota Democratic House primary for the fifth district. Rep. Omar has spent the last two years championing progressive priorities like the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, and defunding Trump’s inhumane deportation machine all while fearlessly fending off Trump’s racist attacks. She brought her fighting spirit to Congress -- working not just on behalf of her constituents in MN-05, but for vulnerable Americans across the country.

Check out our endorsement webpage here -- and then read below for why we think Rep. Omar deserves another two years in office.

Rep. Ilhan Omar is a refugee, a mother, and the first-ever Black, Muslim woman to serve in the House. Yet it’s Rep. Omar’s vision of a better America that has gained her national attention and a place among the Squad. In the last two years, Rep. Omar has established herself as a key member of an emerging progressive voting bloc, often introducing or co-sponsoring ambitious progressive policies. She was an original co-sponsor of the House Green New Deal resolution, advocating for major reform on climate change. She introduced the Homes for All Act, which would finally make secure housing in this country a human right. And during the pandemic she’s been a strong voice for the most vulnerable, calling for mortgage, rent, and student debt cancellations.

When protests erupted in Minneapolis calling for racial justice and an end to police brutality against communities of color, Rep. Omar joined protestors on the front lines. Beyond acting in solidarity with protestors, she made it a point to exercise her power in Congress in a critical way as an original co-sponsor on a bill to end qualified immunity for police officers.

Rep. Omar faces a primary challenger who has received millions of dollars from wealthy conservative donors trying to oust her for standing her ground on progressive issues. She has always put her constituents ahead of wealthy donors and refused corporate money. Let’s put it this way: her average contribution was $18, while her opponent’s was $650. Clearly, the grassroots in the 5th district is firmly behind Rep. Omar.

If you’re with us, the Minnesota primary is a week away, so here’s what you can do this week to help secure Rep. Omar’s candidacy:

Above all, Rep. Omar is a powerful and courageous voice for the most vulnerable Americans, and Indivisibles can play a key role in making sure that Rep. Omar gets another two years in office. We’re proud to work with Rep. Omar as she continues the fight for racial, economic, and social justice, and we’re so glad we’re in this fight with you.

In solidarity,
Indivisible Team

PS: If your group has endorsed a candidate locally and would like to nominate that candidate for a national endorsement, we’ll have two more waves of endorsements announced in September and October. We’ll accept nominations on a rolling basis throughout the election cycle. If you’d like to submit for the next round, Indivisible groups have until 11:59pm PT on Thursday, August 13, to submit candidates for the sixth round of voting.
