The thrilling World Cup victory of the U.S. Women's soccer team shows the transformative power of sport to drive social change. We see it in the global conversation these incredible athletes have ignited over pay equity, and in the powerful role models these champions provide to girls around the world.
Healthy, confident, collaborative athletes are developed from young people with those same traits, and below you will find exciting news about our new Coaching with Courage initiative to promote healthy relationships among young athletes.
On a tougher note, this summer also brings wrenching images of immigrant children in U.S. border detention centers. Our friends at the American Academy of Pediatrics have spoken out about how the traumatic stress these children experience can have lifelong health impacts. Similarly, children in families where adults live in fear of detention or deportation also experience brain-altering trauma.
Our government must stop these harmful practices. And we must all help these traumatized children heal. Below you will find resources on trauma-informed education and treatment from our award-winning Changing Minds campaign.
Your gift to Futures will help us continue our vital work in these two areas that have been so much in the news this month.
With respect,
Esta Soler
Changing Minds
We developed Changing Minds, a campaign to end childhood trauma, in partnership with leading educators and advocates. Changing Minds illustrates the effects of childhood trauma on the brain and it provides evidence-based methods to promote healing from this trauma.
Coaching With Courage
Brian O'Connor, Director of Public Education Campaigns and Programs, introduces Coaching with Courage, a new initiative designed by FUTURES to help young athletes and coaches build healthy, nonviolent relationships. The program emphasizes social-emotional skills, trauma-responsive coaching, and equity in sports programming. Coaches, athletes and educators from around the U.S. attended the launch at our headquarters in San Francisco's Presidio on June 25th.
