Once again, Donald Trump has authorized illegal military action, threatening to take us into another forever war, this time bombing Iran.

These strikes won’t make life better for anyone in Wisconsin. It won’t bring back healthcare coverage or build more housing for us. It won’t make our childcare any cheaper, and it definitely won’t make any of us any safer. Donald Trump isn’t trying to do any of those things. He is, however, trying to distract us.

He is trying to distract us from millions of Americans losing healthcare, millions of Americans having their food assistance ripped off of their tables. He is trying to distract us from the fact that he is credibly accused of raping children.

Trump is not capable of leading. He is not capable of bettering the nation for regular everyday Americans like you and me. He is choosing chaos as cover.

This is absolutely an illegal war, and one that will kill American soldiers and rip apart countless families both abroad, and here at home.

Donald Trump lied to millions of Americans, sold them a bill of goods that he couldn’t deliver on. We all want cheaper groceries, actually affordable housing, childcare that doesn’t break the bank, and wages that allow us to go on vacations and retire, rather than just scrape by.

Our government has the power to deliver those things, but not under Trump, not with our current Congress, and especially not with our current Representative. Derrick Van Orden, who spewed Islamaphobic remarks as justification that killed a reported 200 people and injured several hundreds more.

Congress alone has the power to declare war. Derrick Van Orden has abdicated his authority and abandoned the will of the people he represents. Congress should not authorize American involvement in this war, and should use their authority to rein in this administration and hold them accountable for these illegal actions and gross overreach of authority.

No more forever wars. We deserve affordable childcare, we deserve a good job and a roof over our heads. We deserve to not worry about catastrophic medical debt. We deserve better.
