Upcoming AYD Events

AYD John Lewis Tribute: Good Trouble

The Arlington Young Dems and the Arlington Dems Black Caucus are holding a weekend of action in the memory of the great civil rights leader Rep. John R. Lewis who recently passed on July 17th, 2020. AYD will be holding a viewing via Prime Party of Good Trouble, the CNN produced doc about John Lewis in his battle for civil rights, voting rights, gun control, health care reform and immigration throughout his career. We will then hold a casual discussion over Zoom following the documentary.

We will be watching the the documentary via the Prime Party google chrome extension. Instructions on how to download the Chrome Extension here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/prime-party/

We will post the Prime Party Link at the time of the event!

Register for the Zoom Here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/

If you have any questions, please feel free to email our vice president, Matt Royer, at [email protected]

John Lewis Memorial Weekend of Action

Want to do something to celebrate the life and legacy of John Lewis? Go to one of our Voter Power registration events for our joint Weekend of Action in honor of John Lewis!

Learn how we are socially distancing in order to register voters in person during the pandemic, and pick a location for next weekend to show Arlington residents that we will not be deterred from expanding the voting franchise in our community!

Virginia House Criminal Justice Reform Public Meetings

As we reflect on the impacts of COVID-19 and the movement for Black Lives over the past few months, our membership is often left wondering what more they can do. An important action that you can take is impacting our legislative process through contacting legislators and speaking in open comment sessions.

Governor Northam recently announced that the Virginia General Assembly will be convening on August 18th for a special session to take steps to combat the pandemic, police brutality against Black communities, and workers’ protections. AYD has an advantage in the process of Criminal Justice Reform and Police Reform in the General Assembly since a member of our Arlington Delegation, Del. Patrick Hope HoD-47, chairs the Public Safety Committee in the House of Delegates.

We are encouraging all of our members to take this opportunity to either write to your Delegates and State Senators or speak about issues that you feel strongly about during public meetings of the Joint House Courts of Justice and Public Safety Committees on August 6th. The Arlington Young Democrats are committed to not just using the slogans of the Black Lives Matter Movement, but to also push for positive action for meaningful change in our Commonwealth through our legislative process.

Join the AYD HEE Caucus' Sex Ed Squad!

Help out the mission to make Arlington's sexual health and relationships education medically accurate, comprehensive, inclusive, and age-appropriate! The past HEE Caucus Chair, Pablo Moulden, is seeking volunteers to help with a resolution to amend the Family Life Education curriculum in Arlington.

By changing Arlington's current sex ed curriculum to one that is mandatory and more comprehensive, it would make it age-appropriate, inclusive, and medically accurate. This would cover information about:

  • Contraception (not abstinence only)
  • Partner selection
  • Reproductive health outcomes
  • Consent, sexual harassment, and assault prevention
  • Positive representation of LBGTQ+ related topics
  • Gender identity and sexual orientation

If you are interested in working on this with Pablo, please email him at [email protected].

Join the AYD Communications Committee!

Are you interested in social media, marketing, graphic design, or website management? Want to learn more about what makes AYD tick? Then join the AYD Communications Committee for our August Meeting on August 6th at 7:30 pm. We’d love to help empower our membership to get involved in our messaging and design processes!

If you’re interested, please email our secretary, Maya Jones, at [email protected]
