Hutt South campaign kicks off!
My campaign is officially launched!
Dear John,
Any drive around the Hutt - or indeed the country - will tell you that the election campaign is in full swing! There's just 47 days to go and the signs are up (some of mine ([link removed]) on Waione St went down again within 24 hours, but they're back!) Soon the "Meet the Candidate" events will be underway and I'm looking forward to them.
My campaign slogan for my local campaign is "Getting things done for the Hutt". That's been my key focus for the last three years and one I will continue if I have the privilege of being elected. I've received some very good feedback on my second campaign video - check it out here. ([link removed]) It focuses on some of the smaller - but still very important - things I've been able to achieve in my role as their local MP. Sometimes it's not just about the big projects like Melling!
Sometimes people ask if they can help on the campaign and the answer is a big yes! There's lots of things to do - putting up signs, delivering letters, phone calling, scrutineering, and more. If you're keen to lend a hand then please drop me a message (mailto:
[email protected]?subject=I'm%20keen%20to%20help) - we will find you something to do!
Transport is a major issue in the election campaign and National has announced some exciting policy. A couple of weeks ago Judith Collins and I launched National's Upper North Island and Auckland transport package ([link removed]) - a four lane expressway network ([link removed]) linking Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga, a second harbour crossing in Auckland, and completing the Auckland rapid transit network. This week coming we're launching our Wellington package! I can't wait. Transport is a major issue in the Hutt and this is an area where my Parliamentary responsibilities dovetail nicely with my work as a local MP.
Speaking of Parliament - the House has just three days left, and then we're done until after the election. Last week I questioned ([link removed]) Minister of Finance Grant Robertson about the government's "shovel-ready" projects that they're funding as part of the COVID response. The government is drip-feeding these out over a period of weeks with big Ministerial visits, at a time when communities (and the construction sector) need certainty. We've called on the government to release the list ASAP. On another note, I've had a few people mention Winston's appalling speech in Parliament the other week and my reply. Check it out here ([link removed]) , if you're interested.
Have a great day and see you soon.
Chris
Launching my campaign for Hutt South!
[link removed]
I officially launched my campaign for Hutt South at Buzz Cafe last Monday. Thanks to everyone who came along, it was an amazing night! I've had a lot of people ask me how they can help with the election - so if you'd like to assist me, please click here ([link removed]) to sign-up as a member of "Team Bish". There's lots of ways to assist - everything from delivering leaflets, letters, phone calling, door-knocking, and more. If you can host a sign on your fence, please let me know. (mailto:
[email protected]?subject=I%20can%20host%20a%20sign) I am deeply appreciative of all the support I get from people in the Hutt, and I'd love to continue as your MP - so if you can help out please let me know.
Judith Collins in the Hutt
Judith Collins came to the Hutt on Tuesday and announced our new BusinessStart policy. National believes that we need to unleash a wave of entrepreneurialism in New Zealand.
We need thousands of new businesses to kickstart our economy and create tens of thousands of new jobs. National will deliver this with a package of incentives that provide equity and cashflow to ensure new businesses succeed through the economic crisis.
For those who lose their jobs after 1 March 2020, National will support them if they want to get into their own business and give them the confidence to take on the challenge. Check it out here. ([link removed])
Signs up!
Let me know if you want one on your fence!
COVID Recovery Forum
A very good public forum a couple of weeks ago on our COVID Recovery. Thank you to Paul Matthews from the IT Professionals Assn, Kaz Yung, and Helen Down from the Chamber of Commerce for coming along, and of course a big crowd. A really good discussion on the future of our community post-COVID.
Collecting for Women's Refuge
Collecting for Lower Hutt Women’s Refuge on Saturday.
Meet Sam!
Hi all, meet Sam! She's one of my volunteers who helps me at the markets every Saturday, delivers flyers and comes door knocking.
Sam and I met three years ago when she moved to the Hutt. She was carrying eight bags of groceries, they were heavy and items were falling out. She tells me I came to her rescue by helping to carry the bags to her car. I don’t even recall it to be honest but she filled me in recently. At some point she discovered I was an MP and offered to return the favour and volunteer - and she’s also become a mate.
Mum bought the Mullet!
Auctioned off the original "Bish Mullet" at my campaign launch the other night and the winner was.... my Mum!
Parliamentary Rugby in Wainuiomata
Lovely touch from some Wainuiomata locals at the recent Parliamentary Rugby XV v Centurions match in Wainuiomata last weekend. Great to see "The Eliminator" Dr Bloomfield score the first try, with a pass from Mayor Barry!
Business with Bish
I've been continuing my series profiling exciting Hutt businesses - check out SuperSeed Crackers ([link removed]) and Hutt and City Taxis.

Parkrun
Good to get back into the Parkuns again post-lockdown!
Beltway Cycleway Sod-turning
Was disappointed due to a conflicting appointment across town I couldn't join Mayor Barry and Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter for the sod-turning on the "Beltway" cycle network in the Hutt on Wednesday.
The new cycleway will provide a 2.5-metre wide off-road sealed and separated cycleway from Waterloo to The River Trail at Taita.
Great to see progress being made on this, plus of course Petone to Melling, and Petone to Ngauranga.
Jackson St Project continues!
Delicious meal at Ruchi on Jackson St the other night! We’ve been continuing our Jackson St project, working our way down the street from West to East. How good is a cheeky chicken korma!?!
Ladyhawke loves coming to Parliament!
A very special visitor to Parliament last week! Video here. ([link removed])
