I wanted to make sure you saw this, John:
Just days away from the primary, Lacy Clay is spending his time, energy, and resources doubling down on an increasingly disturbing campaign against Cori.
But first, we have less than 48 hours left until the polls open on Tuesday.
Yesterday, our campaign manager, Isra Allison, released a statement denouncing his latest hateful attack:
"The lengths Lacy Clay is going to to misrepresent and malign Cori Bush’s character ahead of the August 4th Primary Election seemingly knows no bounds. Last week, Lacy Clay sent a mailer and began running radio and television ads intended to mislead voters in Missouri’s First about Cori Bush’s history as a pastor and nurse, seemingly to shame her for having struggled as a Black, working class, single-mother. The ugly and tone-deaf mailer even outright lied about Cori Bush not having voted for Barack Obama in 2008.
Last night, our campaign was made aware of a second hateful Clay mailer, in which, among other things, he digitally altered a photo of Cori Bush to make her skin darker. The racist undertones of his earlier attacks are now front and center. These tactics are nothing short of despicable. At this moment in our nation’s history when we are confronting a racist President seeking to divide us on top of a moment in which the country is undergoing a reckoning regarding systemic racism, to see these tactics being waged by a Black Congressman is reprehensible. They have no place in the Democratic Party, and they have no place for anyone representing Missouri’s First District, a predominately Black district. We call on Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic Congressional leadership to join us in denouncing them in the strongest terms possible.”
Here’s a side-by-side of Clay’s doctored mailer and the original photo:
Clay’s mailer exploits a picture of Cori with fellow former Bernie Sanders surrogate Linda Sarsour to stoke fears of anti-semitism and promote islamophobia. The opposite could not be more true: Cori and Linda joined an interfaith coalition of clergy, politicians, and community leaders fighting against family separation at the border.
In July of 2019, Cori was invited by fellow faith leaders Rabbi Rick Jacobs; Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II; Imam Omar Suleiman; Rev. Terri Hord Owens; and Rev. Dr. Robin Tanner to visit El Paso, Texas for “Moral Monday at the Borderlands” to protest the detention of child migrants in cages by the United States government. Clay was absent.
In solidarity,
Keenan Korth
