The Scalise Capitol Report

Securing Critical LA-01 Flood Resiliency & Navigation Priorities

This week, the House passed the Water Resources Development Act of 2020 (WRDA). This bill strengthens flood protection critical to families and communities in Southeast Louisiana and improves the navigation essential for the economic stability of Louisiana and the entire country.

This bill includes provisions I fought for to enhance our ability to move commerce on our waterways through authorizations for deepening Baptiste Collette, the Houma Navigation Canal, and Port Fourchon Belle Pass. It also authorizes a study for the Tangipahoa River that will produce necessary solutions for flooding in the region.

Overall, this legislation strengthens Louisiana’s position as a leading export state and a top producer of our nation’s oil and natural gas supply, and I’m glad Congress is supporting the infrastructure so critical to our state and nation.

Highlighting President Trump’s Actions to Save Lives and Combat COVID-19

I opened this week’s Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis hearing by outlining the Trump Administration’s bold and historic plan to combat COVID-19 and save American lives, including Operation Warp Speed, which has made remarkable progress in their plan to develop, manufacture, and distribute COVID-19 vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics with the specific goal of delivering 300 million doses of a safe, effective vaccine for COVID-19 by January 2021.

House Democrats titled this week’s hearing "The Urgent Need for a National Plan to Contain the Coronavirus," which, given the hundreds of guidance documents provided by the Trump Administration to states, suggests that Democrats either haven't read or have ignored these plans.

I also had the opportunity to set the record straight on concrete actions President Trump has taken to contain COVID-19 with Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Robert Redfield, the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Admiral Brett Giroir, the Assistant Secretary for Health overseeing nationwide testing efforts.

Community Updates

Call to Action: President Trump announced a nationwide Call to Action at the American Red Cross Headquarters this week, urging those who have recovered from COVID-19 to donate their plasma. Click here for more information from the FDA on how and where to donate plasma to help in the fight against COVID-19.

Safely Reopening Schools: I discussed the importance of safely reopening schools this fall with the CDC Director, Dr. Redfield, who emphasized, "I think it's important to realize that it's in the public health best interest of K-12 students to get back in face-to-face learning."

Operation Warp Speed: Thanks to Operation Warp Speed, a number of vaccine candidates have shown promising early clinical results and are either in or starting Phase 3 clinical trials, including AstraZeneca, Moderna, and Pfizer. I confirmed with Dr. Fauci that there’s been no compromise on safety nor scientific integrity to develop a COVID-19 vaccine.

USDA Food Assistance: The USDA continues to provide updates about the Farmers To Families Food Box Program, which is part of the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program that was passed by Congress to distribute food to those in need during the Coronavirus crisis.

It is an honor to represent you in Congress. For more information please visit my website, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook pages.
