Every voice should be heard, and every vote should count equally. That simple reason is why we’re joining with the citizen-led Michigan group, Voters Not Politicians, in the legal fight to defend the state’s nonpartisan redistricting body.

Michigan is one of the many states where the people have said enough is enough to partisan gerrymandering. Voters Not Politicians collected over 425,000 signatures from Michiganders to put gerrymandering on the ballot in 2018, and over 2.5 million people voted to take the redistricting power out of the hands of self-interested legislators and give it to an independent commission. But now, the politicians who are afraid of losing power (since they can no longer pick and choose their voters) are challenging the will of Michigan voters in court.

Campaign Legal Center and Voters Not Politicians plan to defend the will of the people. We have officially joined in the court battles to protect Michigan’s new Independent Redistricting Commission. Read more about our cases.

With the 2020 redistricting cycle looming, the time to enact reforms that will permanently improve democracy in the states is now. Independent redistricting commissions are a critical tool for citizens to reform the system in their states.
