In just a couple of hours, President Trump will address the nation in what is sure to be a sprawling, misinformation-filled State of the Union.
We can count on him to sow division, spread lies, and insult our country’s community leaders.
What he won’t do is give an accurate recounting of how his administration has impacted our access to healthcare and ability to pay for it.
In just over a year in office, Trump’s federal government has:
- Slashed funding to Medicaid, which could result in 8 million people losing their healthcare
- Effectively “defunded” Planned Parenthood, putting reproductive healthcare centers at risk of closing and cutting off access to vital care like mammograms and STI testing
- Cut funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and housing assistance programs
- Sent health insurance premiums soaring for more than 22 million people
Tonight, Trump will try to spin up a false narrative around affordability and working families.
But make no mistake: the Trump administration’s agenda is a transparent effort to enrich the wealthiest people in the country at the expense of millions of hardworking families.
Our state and local leaders are on the frontlines of fighting back. In fact, the official rebuttal tonight will be delivered by Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger, who we were proud to help elect last year.
