Tomorrow,
as rent is due for millions of our neighbors, the Republican-controlled
Senate is choosing to let a critical $600 weekly unemployment benefit
expire. Working America is running towards a cliff, and Mitch McConnell
has decided to let us fall off.

The Senate’s officially left town, meaning no emergency bill will be
passed in time. When it came to bailing out massive corporations,
Republicans were quick to pass substantial relief. But when it comes to
the families who have felt the brunt of economic harm, they’re just on
their own.

It’s honestly sickening. My colleagues and I in the House have had a
relief bill ready for months. All Republicans in the Senate had to do was
get out of the way, but they couldn’t even manage that. Now, working-class
people will pay for their partisan posturing.

Every day, we’re doing everything in our power to fill in the gaps in
leadership left by a Republican Senate. And situations like these are
reminders that when we have the opportunity, we must fight hard for the
progressive solutions to fix our broken economy.

Working families may have been pushed to the brink by the COVID-19
pandemic, but the only reason we were close enough to economic ruin is
because we have an economy designed to protect the top 1%. From a stagnant
minimum wage to a lack of economic opportunity in too many places across
the country, we need to correct the entire system.

Seeing this reality is disheartening. Mitch McConnell’s ability to block
critical economic relief is deeply frustrating. But if we don’t give up,
if we give it our all, and if we stand up for our principles, he can’t
block change forever.
