Earlier this month, Republicans in Congress introduced a bill that would widely restrict your right to vote, undermining the basic tenants of our democracy.
This bill is called the “SAVE Act” and would require in-person proof of citizenship in order to vote – meaning a passport, birth certificate, or other government-issued photo ID.
While Republicans are arguing that this bill is necessary to prevent noncitizens from voting, even the right-wing Heritage Foundation has found only a handful of cases of that actually happening.
The truth is that this bill is both a modern-day poll tax, an opportunity to disenfranchise already marginalized voters, AND drastically cut into the vote-by-mail system.
This bill is a blatant attempt by Republicans to stack the deck in their favor in what will be a tough election year for them. They know they can’t win on their values, so they have to win by preventing millions of people from voting against them.
But we won’t back down. In the face of injustice, we’re going to be working twice as hard to educate voters in WI-03 about how to vote and how to ensure their ballot is counted. Would you contribute right now towards our efforts before midterm elections?
